Ready to take your first step into the world of swimming teaching?
Our SEQ Level 1 Assistant (Teaching) qualification gives you everything you need to start assisting swim lessons with confidence.
This course has a guided learning hour count (GLH) of 26 hours.
🔱What this course gives you:
By the end of this qualification, you will:
• Understand the role and responsibilities of a swimming assistant
• Be able to support a qualified Level 2 teacher on poolside
• Gain real hands-on experience assisting actual swimming lessons
• Receive a nationally recognised Swim England qualification

This course is ideal if you are:

You must be 16 or older on the course start date. No previous qualifications are required
🔱 How the course is delivered:
This is a blended course with a mix of virtual and in-person elements, designed for flexibility while still providing meaningful practical experience.
1. Welcome Webinar (ZOOM)
A friendly introduction session to meet your tutor and fellow learners and get set up for success.
2. Two 3.5-hour Virtual Webinars (ZOOM)
Interactive live teaching sessions with your tutor to cover the core knowledge you’ll need.
3. Independent eLearning
You’ll be asked to complete 6–8 hours of structured and reviewed online learning in your own time, supported by a knowledge check to reinforce understanding before your practical days. In the case of extra support your tutor will provide this.
4. Two 5 hour Practical Days at Newton-le-Willows Leisure Centre
These in-person sessions include some time with your tutor to go through demonstrations and check your knowledge as well as supporting a qualified Level 2 swimming teacher and assisting in a minimum of two 30-minute swimming lessons and a short written review of your performance.

Your tutor will support you in developing key knowledge and skills, including:
• Supporting the delivery of swimming lessons
• Understanding the fundamental movement and aquatic skills
• Components of each swimming stroke and how to assist with them
• The science behind swimming and skill development
• Creating inclusive, engaging lessons
• Reflecting on your own development
🔱How will I be assessed?
You’ll complete a range of tutor-assessed activities:
• 17 short written questions (completed online or in your own time)
• A practical assessment assisting in real swim lessons
• A short written review record following your practical experience

Please remember this particular qualification leads into becoming a fully qualified level 2 swimming teacher next. It does not enable you to deliver swimming lessons independently. As a level 1 swimming teaching assistant you support and work within the guidance of a level 2 swimming teacher in an assisting capacity.
